Vitamin B6 is a key cofactor in the normal, healthy metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and amino acids. Additionally its needed for homocysteine conversion and immune and brain health.
P5P is the active form of vitamin B6 and is required for over 100 different metabolic processes in the body, particularly in relation to metabolism of proteins.
While vitamin B6 can be obtained from some vegetables like potatoes and avocados, the plant derived vitamin B6 comes in a different form which is less bioavailable to the body. This means it may be harder for the body to absorb and use than vitamin B6 from animal sources like salmon, chicken and other meat.
Thus supplementing with active vitamin B6 may be particularly important for those following a plant-based diet.
