Serrapeptase, a key ingredient in Vitalzym, was originally discovered in Japan and is commercially produced there for health applications. It has been used as a substitute for animal-derived enzymes, such as chymotrypsin due to its ability to remain active in a wider pH range than animal-derived enzymes. In addition to serrapeptase, Vitalzym Extra Strength contains other key ingredients to support a healthy immune response, cellular and circulatory health.
The 100% vegetarian enteric coating of the capsules ensures that the enzymes are able to move through the harsh stomach environment intact to reach the intestines where they are absorbed into the circulation.

On the negative side I haven't noticed anything other than mild stomach discomfort (if I take Vitalzym on an empty stomach before mealtime). I'm therefore following a during-meal or shortly-after-meal timing and it works better for me without any difference in benefits. Overall I'm very satisfied with Vitalzym after a little over a week and look forward to measuring the longer term effects to see how much they accumulate, or if other benefits arise I haven't seen so far at low dosage.
