Keep, Toss or Move? Spring Clean Your Supplement Cupboard!
Is your supplement shelf cluttered with half-empty bottles from last year? You could be swallowing "dead" nutrients — or worse, rancid oils.
As we age, our bodies require maximum potency from every capsule. Here is your 4-step guide to ensure your health supplements are actually delivering results.

The 4-Step Freshness Audit
The Scent Test (Oils)
Omega-3s and Vitamin E are prone to oxidation. If your fish oil smells intensely "fishy" or sour, it has likely gone rancid. Oxidised oils can increase inflammation — the exact opposite of what you want!
The Visual Check
Look for dark spots (moisture damage), fading colours (light damage), or softgels that are stuck together (heat damage). If it looks "off," its chemical integrity is likely compromised.
The Dissolution Check
Is that multivitamin a year old? Drop one in a glass of warm water with a splash of vinegar. If it hasn't dissolved within 30 minutes, your digestion likely won't break it down either.
The Expiry Reality Check
Supplements are labelled with a Best Before date to guarantee potency. Taking a tablet a year past its date isn't necessarily dangerous, but it is likely ineffective.
The Expert Take: While dry vitamins rarely "spoil" like milk will, their potency diminishes daily past the best before date. For liquids, probiotics, and oils, an expiry date is a firm deadline for safety and freshness. For dry tablets, we recommend a 3-month grace period; beyond that, you're likely losing the clinical results you're paying for. When in doubt, fresh is always best for your health.
The "Keep, Toss, or Move" Guide
| Action | Item / Status | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| TOSS | Expired Liquids / Oils | High risk of rancidity and bacterial growth. |
| TOSS | Cracked / Powdery Pills | Indicates moisture ingress; potency is compromised. |
| TOSS | 6+ Months Past "Best By" | Potency has degraded; you aren't getting the health benefit. |
| MOVE | Anything by the Stove | Heat and steam are the #1 "supplement killers." |
| MOVE | Bathroom Cabinet | High humidity causes pills to break down inside the bottle. |
| KEEP | Cool, Dry, Dark Pantry | The gold standard for maintaining vitamin shelf-life. |
| REFRIGERATE | Probiotics / Liquid Omegas | Check the label! Cold temps preserve live cultures. |
Pro-Tip for Potency: Avoid the kitchen bench trap. While it helps you remember to take them, UV light from windows can degrade Vitamin C and B-vitamins in just a few weeks. Switch to an opaque tablet/capsule organiser or keep your bottles out of the way in a dark drawer!
